To help ensure the independence, impartiality and accountability of the justice system, the Mission regularly monitors and reports on the work of the judiciary, prosecution and advocates and assesses whether they perform in compliance with international human rights and rule of law standards. It engages in activities to improve performance of the justice sector and to support non-judicial institutions in defending human rights.
It places particular focus on the effective administration of justice in inter-ethnic cases, and those with a disproportionate impact on women or specific communities. It monitors topics of particular current interest, such as violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism, as well as the responses of prosecutorial and judicial authorities in this area. The Mission also reviews legislation to highlight human rights and rule of law concerns, and helps institutions develop and implement legislation systematically.
