Policing

Its key activities include advising institutions on legislation, supporting the implementation and revision of their strategies and action plans, and organizing training courses for law enforcement officials, judges and prosecutors on issues such as cyber and economic crimes, corruption, trafficking in human beings, forensic examination, anti-terrorism and violent extremism, illicit trafficking of drugs, hate crime and domestic violence. The Mission also promotes inter-institutional co-operation by encouraging members of public safety agencies to work together in order to complement each other in their preventive and investigative efforts.
The Mission monitors the work of the Kosovo Police for their compliance with international human rights standards and provides recommendations on issues such as use of force, freedom of expression and assembly, and the protection of socially vulnerable groups. It also works to strengthen the police oversight capacities of the Police Inspectorate of Kosovo and the Kosovo Police, with a view to effectively maintaining police accountability and fighting potential corruption and organized crime in the police force. The Mission also supports the development of vocational qualifications and assists with the accreditation process of the Academy for Public Safety and the Forensic Agency. It helps to develop community policing practices and assists in establishing and enhancing capacities of community safety mechanisms in Kosovo to improve the quality of life. Finally, the Mission provides strategic and capacity building support to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the police in enhancing their messages to the public, as well as in effectively raising public awareness on various safety and security matters.
