Following an invitation from the authorities of Turkmenistan and in accordance with its mandate, ODIHR has deployed an Election Assessment Mission to the 26 March 2023 parliamentary elections.
The mission is led by Corien Jonker and consists of a core team of five experts based in Ashgabat. The mission will assess whether the elections are held in line with OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as with national legislation.
Observers will closely follow fundamental components of the election such as:
- The election administration
- The political and campaign environment
- The legal framework for elections
- The media environment, as it relates to elections
Election day
The ODIHR EAM will not carry out systematic or comprehensive observation of the voting, counting and tabulation on election day. Mission members will, however, visit a small number of polling stations on the day.
