Combating money laundering, including the criminal use of virtual assets and cryptocurrencies is one of the key priorities of the OSCE. The As one of the first international organizations to enter into this complex and evolving field, the OSCE has demonstrated a pioneering spirit and a forward-thinking approach. This initiative directly aligns with the OSCE's broader mandate in anti-money laundering, underlining its commitment to address contemporary security challenges.

The involvement of the OSCE in this domain is not just a response to a growing global concern but also a proactive measure to assist its participating States in navigating the intricate landscape of digital finance. By taking on this role, the OSCE solidifies its position as a leader and a primary resource in combating financial crimes in the digital era.

The OSCE's added value in this endeavour is underscored by its extensive experience in supporting its participating States in combating, preventing, and prosecuting money laundering activities. This is not the Organization's first venture into the realm of financial crime; it has previously conducted a series of specialized trainings focused on the investigation of cryptocurrency transactions. These training sessions have equipped law enforcement and regulatory bodies within the OSCE participating States with crucial skills and knowledge to trace and intercept illegal transactions conducted with the use of virtual assets. Furthermore, the OSCE has played an instrumental role in hosting workshops on legislative frameworks, guiding member states in the development of robust and effective laws pertaining to virtual assets. The OSCE's involvement extends to assisting in the drafting of virtual assets regulations, demonstrating its comprehensive approach to tackling the multifaceted challenges posed by digital currencies. This depth of experience and the breadth of activities highlight the OSCE's capability and readiness to lead efforts in mitigating the risks associated with virtual assets and cryptocurrencies, ensuring a secure and transparent digital financial environment.

Since November 2022 until May 2024, the project team has conducted and organized:

12 workshops on awareness raising among public officials, including workshops Virtual assets regulations
11 basic and advanced trainings on investigations involving crypto-assets
2 study visits for public officials from Georgia and Moldova with
- more than 416 representatives from more than 4 countries, 170 of whom were women
