The publication presents a comparative practices in providing legal assistance in criminal cases. This report reflects the main issues discussed during a two-day workshop on “Preventive and Quiet Diplomacy, Dialogue Facilitation and Mediation – Best Practices from Regional Organizations,” held in Vienna, Austria on 6 and 7 December 2010. The Workshop brought together senior representatives from the UN and key regional organizations to foster closer co-operation and knowledge-sharing on preventive and quiet diplomacy, dialogue facilitation and mediation. Key issues addressed include: regional aspects of mediation, common challenges to mediation faced by regional organizations, good practices from regional organizations, as well as the operationalization of mediation support capacities.
