OSCE concludes training for judges on environmental issues in Kazakhstan
The OSCE Programme Office in Astana supported the second of two training seminars on the judicial application of environmental legislation in civil and economic cases, which was held in Astana on 22 June 2017.
During the seminar, organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in co-operation with the Supreme Court and its Justice Academy, a national expert trained some 30 regional court judges from across the country in resolving disputes arising from the implementation of the UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (also known as the Aarhus Convention).
Participants learned about Kazakhstan’s commitments under the Aarhus Convention and mechanisms to promote compliance with it. They also engaged in group exercises to analyze hypothetical violations of environmental legislation and reviewed previous relevant cases.
The event is part of the Office’s multi-year efforts to build the capacity of the host country to fulfil its commitments in strengthening the national institutional and legal frameworks of the the implementation of the Aarhus Convention.
