OSCE helps find ways to counter extremism and radicalization in prisons
Ways to counter violent extremism and radicalization that might lead to terrorism in Kygyzstan’s penitentiary establishments were discussed during a two-day seminar which started on 19 November 2012 in Bishkek. The event was organized jointly by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and the State Penitentiary Service.
The purpose of the seminar is to enhance the capacity of the penitentiary system in preventing, detecting and countering extremist and radical tendencies, as well as behaviour and actions that potentially could lead to terrorism. Participants will also examine the human rights concerns that need to be addressed when conducting such operations.
Around 35 participants, including officials of the State Penitentiary Service, the State Committee of National Security and the Interior Ministry, will have the opportunity to become familiar with international best practices in this field and to exchange information on the current situation in Kyrgyzstan. Local as well as international experts from Russia, Kazakhstan and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime will participate in the seminar.
