ASTANA, 27 June 2012 – A high-level national meeting on combating money laundering, terrorism financing and corruption as essential elements of good governance was held in Astana today with the support of the OSCE Centre in Astana.
The meeting was organized by the OSCE Centre in co-operation with Kazakhstan’s Agency on Fighting with Economic and Corruption Crimes and with the support of the Office of the Coordinator of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities.
Over 60 representatives of all national institutions involved in practical work and legislative efforts on good governance, including the Administration of the President, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Foreign Ministry and other ministries, as well as the civil society, the private sector, international organizations and diplomatic missions in the country, took part in the conference:
"Corruption, money laundering and terrorism financing are threats all OSCE participating States are facing,” said Ambassador Natalya Zarudna, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Astana in her opening remarks. “Political will, close international and interagency interaction, as well as the support from the private sector and civil society are necessary to effectively fight them.”
“Among CIS countries, Kazakhstan has become one of the leaders in the establishment and implementation of modern anti-corruption and AML/CFT legislation. This positive experience has to be popularized,” said General Andrey Lukin, the First Deputy Chairman of the Agency on Fighting with Economic and Corruption Crimes.
“Due to Kazakhstan’s consistent and intensive efforts, the 2010 Astana Commemorative Declaration successfully reconfirmed OSCE values and commitments, including in combating corruption, money laundering and terrorism financing. The task now is to translate these political commitments into practical actions,” said Serzhan Abdykarimov, the Chairman of the Foreign Policy Analyses and Forecasting Committee of the Foreign Ministry.
The meeting is part of Kazakhstan’s preparations for the 20th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum “Promoting Security and Stability through Good Governance,” which will be held in Prague from 12 to 14 September 2012.
