OSCE supports training seminar on data journalism in Kazakhstan
An OSCE-supported training seminar on data journalism for some 15 journalists from across Kazakhstan started on 22 August 2016 in Astana.
The two-day event was co-organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in co-operation with the Information and Communication Ministry, the National Information Technologies Joint Stock Company and Internews Kazakhstan with the aim of providing journalists with a deeper understanding of open data sources, data visualization principles, data-journalism and data-processing methods.
The journalists together with experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Russian Federation will learn how to analyze and filter large data sets for the purpose of creating a news story, including through the use of e-Government portals such as Open Government and Open Data. The training seminar will be combined with a practical exercise on data visualization.
“Effective and responsible use of open data is a key skill for journalists in the contribution they make to public oversight over government activities, especially in the context of the OSCE-supported Law on Access to Information,” said Sara Bonotti, Human Dimension Officer of the OSCE Programme Office. “This training seminar will equip participants with the necessary know-how and tools on how to structure and analyse statistical information and data and to visually present it.”
The training seminar is part of the Office’s activities aimed at promoting media freedom and freedom of expression in line with OSCE principles and commitments.
