OSCE Programme Office in Astana supports workshop on countering violent extremism in Central Asia
An OSCE-supported research workshop on countering violent extremism in Central Asia concluded on 3 September 2015 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The two-day event was co-organized by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague and the Centre for Security Programs in Astana with funding from the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme and support from the OSCE Programme Office in Astana.
The workshop aimed to facilitate the sharing of experience and exchange of ideas between experts in countering violent extremism.
The participants of the closed roundtable discussed current trends, indicators and possible responses to violent extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism in Central Asia.
Some 40 non-governmental experts, government officials and practitioners from Albania, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan took part in the discussion.
The event is part of the OSCE Programme Office’s multiyear efforts to counter violent extremism and radicalization leading to terrorism and to promote international co-operation in this endeavour.
