OSCE condemns vandalization of graves at the Serb memorial cemetery

VUKOVAR, 20 January 2000 - During the night of 19/20 January 2000, eight more graves at the Serb memorial cemetery 'Aleja' in Vukovar were damaged. Previously a similar incident at this cemetery occurred on Christmas Eve when 11 graves and headstones were vandalized. The OSCE Mission to Croatia condemns the desecration of any graveyard or other religious site. The Mission calls upon the police to take all necessary measures to apprehend the perpetrators and to ensure security. The OSCE would also remind the authorities of their obligation under the Government's Trust Establishment Programme to make every effort to calm tensions in the region.
