OSCE helps young people in Uzbekistan become environmentally aware

TASHKENT, 16 August 2012 – Sixty-five young boys and girls will learn about the importance of taking care of the environment at an environmental summer camped opened by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan today.

The ten-day camp is taking place in the mountains of the Tashkent region and is organized together with the NGO Ekomaktab (Ecoschool) and printing house, Chinor Enk, in close co-operation with the State Committee for Nature Protection. 

Senior Project Officer Christoph Opfermann emphasized his appreciation for Uzbekistan’s natural landscape and encouraged camp participants to take the opportunity to get close to nature. “Environmental awareness comes from understanding of nature, and understanding comes from experience and fascination,” said Opfermann.

The camp is part of a programme by the OSCE in Uzbekistan on improving public awareness of the environment and media reporting in Uzbekistan. In July, a delegation of Uzbek specialists visited Denmark to learn about environmental journalism.
