OSCE Centre in Tashkent organizes roundtable for farmers and lawyers in Uzbekistan
TASHKENT 19 July 2004
TASHKENT, 19 July 2004 - The OSCE Centre in Tashkent (CiT) is to hold a two-day roundtable on 20 and 21 July entitled "Providing Legal Assistance to Farmers", aimed at lawyers and farmers from every region of Uzbekistan.
This roundtable has three main goals: to increase lawyers' awareness and ability to protect the rights of farmers; to improve farmers' knowledge of, and ability to protect, their rights; and to draft recommendations regarding the provision of enhanced legal assistance to farmers.
The trainers will include specialists from the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Economic Court, Commercial Banks, the State Tax Committee, and the State Institute of Law.
Participants will discuss current topics including renting land and establishing farms, signing and executing contracts, the taxation of farmers, labour issues related to farms, protecting farmers' rights, and contractual disputes.
The event is being organized by the OSCE/CiT, in conjunction with the Lawyers' Association of Uzbekistan. CiT intends that this pilot roundtable will help foster direct contact between lawyers and farmers and promote their further co-operation. If this event is successful, CiT plans to hold more such roundtables in other provinces of the country.
