OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine helps journalists’ trade unions to enhance safety network

Twenty-eight journalists from across Ukraine were trained on safe and responsible reporting in hostile and crisis situations on 11 September 2014 in Kyiv. The training course, organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine (PCU), was held upon the request of the National Union of Journalists and the Independent Media Trade Union.
The participants, who will act as focal points for their colleagues in the regions, were trained on risk assessment and behaviour in emergency situations. They also learned the basics of medical first aid and tips on interacting with police and security forces in times of crisis. A part of the workshop focused on responsible and ethical journalism issues related to the coverage of conflicts.
“The work of journalists is of crucial importance at the moment; it helps the conflict resolution and reconciliation process,” said OSCE Project Co-ordinator, Ambassador Vaidotas Verba. “The safety of a journalist must always be a priority. The knowledge gained today will certainly help in their future work.”
In addition to informative handouts, participants received the guidebook on Safety of Journalists, which was developed by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. The book also can be downloaded online in English and Russian.
The workshop was conducted as part of the OSCE PCU project on Continued Support to Improving Relations between Ukraine’s Law Enforcement Agencies and Media Professionals. As an outcome of this project, a manual with recommendations for both law enforcers and media professionals on safe conduct during crisis situations will be developed and presented.
