OSCE Office in Tajikistan supports training course for women’s penitentiary staff on international standards for treatment of women prisoners
Staff members of the women’s penitentiary in the town of Nurek attended a training course co-organized by the OSCE Office in Tajikistan on 15-16 December 2015 on practical aspects of the UN Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners, also known as the Bangkok Rules.
The training, which took place on the premises of the women’s penitentiary (70 km south-east of Dushanbe), was aimed at raising awareness about the specific needs of female prisoners - including pregnant women and women with infants.
The training also marked five years of the Bangkok Rules, which were adopted by the UN General Assembly on 21 December 2010, and were the first international instrument recognizing the special needs of women deprived of their liberty.
The training was delivered by experts in prison reform from Kazakhstan, Poland and the Russian Federation and was organized in co-operation with the Prison Service of Tajikistan’s Ministry of Justice, Penal Reform International, the OSCE Office in Tajikistan and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
