OSCE Skopje Mission presents report on equitable representation in the judiciary
SKOPJE 13 December 2004
SKOPJE, 13 December 2004 - A report on the equitable representation of non-majority citizens in the judiciary was presented here today at a meeting organized jointly by the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.
The paper was delivered together with a report by the American Bar Association/Central and East European Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) on minority participation in the legal professions in the country.
"We hope the proposals outlined in the Mission report will serve as an incentive for a continued discussion of the topic by the public as well as concerned professional groups," said Victor Ullom, Head of the OSCE Mission's Rule of Law Unit. "The conclusions and recommendations were formulated using existing international standards as a guideline".
Factual information, statistics and other data for the report were collected by the Mission in co-operation with relevant authorities and are based on a survey conducted among professional groups.
The Mission plans to conduct another survey on feedback to the report among judicial professionals this year and organize a series of meetings with judges, prosecutors and legal professionals in several basic court districts in early 2005.
