SKOPJE, 7 July 2004 - An OSCE-sponsored workshop on the involvement of civil society in police reform began in Skopje today.
The event aims at identifying areas in which NGOs can provide input and work together with the police in the reform process.
"The OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje supports the inclusion of civil society in police reform and we hope the workshop participants will agree to establish effective co-operation mechanisms," said Victor Ullom, Head of the Mission's Rule of Law Unit.
The workshop includes a briefing on the reform strategy and an open discussion by the participants, who include representatives from the Ministry of Interior and a broad range of NGOs.
The event was organized by MINOP, the Advisory Group for Fostering Co-operation between Ministry of Interior, Civil Society and the Ombudsman Office. Following the workshop, the conclusions will be distributed to the authorities and the general public.
