SKOPJE 26 September 2003
SKOPJE, 26 September 2003 - A new radio series bringing together citizens and local government officials has been hailed by the Tetovo municipality as an important step towards enhanced civic responsibility.
The series, entitled "Face to Face", are funded by the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje, and are being produced and broadcast every Wednesday at 14.00 by the local Tetovo radio station, Kanal Plus Forte.
The series comprise sixteen 30-minutes programmes on topics that are of high interest to local citizens in the Tetovo area, such as garbage collection, the difficulties with water supplies, road maintenance and local government reform.
Each programme is based on extensive background research including case studies and 'vox pops' as well as live interviews with government officials and phone-ins.
"These programmes give local citizens of all ethnicities the chance, for the first time, to talk to government officials directly live on air," said Sanda Srbinovska, the director of the series. "It's not about confrontation, it's about mutually looking for solutions and understanding responsibilities."
The President of the Council of Tetovo municipality, Hasan Ljuma, was one of the first to take part in the programme. "The experience you make there is good for everyone", he said.
"These are well researched programmes that identify the real problems of different individuals. It's a challenge, but with the growing responsibilities of local government as a result of increased decentralization, this sort of dialogue is important."
