SKOPJE, 21 March 2007 - Some 300 high school students from Skopje municipalities of Karpos and Kondovo and police officers from Karpos and Gjorce Petrov municipalities marked Ecology Day by cleaning up the banks of the Vardar river as well as the walking paths in the area.
The idea was initiated by the students' Citizens Advisory Group from Karpos municipality and supported by the OSCE Mission to Skopje within the framework of its community policing project.
"We are pleased that there are more local initiatives, where police and students can work together to improve the environment. At the same time, actions like this one allow students to see a human face behind the uniform," said Raul Correa, of the OSCE Mission's Police Development Unit .
Georgi Ackovski, CAG Project Co-ordinator, added: "This activity was aimed at raising environmental awareness, whilst building mutual trust, interethnic tolerance and co-operation between police and citizens, particularly students."
The students also had a chance to observe first-aid training by the Red Cross and exercises performed by police and their trained dogs.
