OSCE Mission organizes working visit of Serbian war crimes judges to ICTY
BELGRADE, 1 September 2010 - Ten judges from the War Crimes Department of the High and Appellate Courts in Belgrade started a visit to the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague today to discuss issues related to ongoing and future war crimes trials.
During the three-day working visit, organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia in co-operation with the U.S. Department of Justice, representatives of Serbia's judiciary will meet the President of the ICTY, Judge Patrick Robinson, and other ICTY judges.
"The OSCE Mission has been assisting Serbia in strengthening the judiciary and providing redress to the victims of war crimes, and this visit is an important part of this long-term effort," said Ruth Van-Rhijn, the head of the Mission's Rule of Law and Human Right Department.
Judge Tatjana Vukovic, President of the War Crimes Department of the High Court in Belgrade, added: "We will have an opportunity to directly address a number of legal and practical issues of mutual interest with our colleagues at the ICTY and exchange experiences. Such interaction is essential for making our practices more consistent and for increasing the efficiency of justice in war crimes cases."
