OSCE assists Serbian Government in fight against corruption
BELGRADE 24 October 2002
BELGRADE, 24 October 2002 - A conference on concrete anti-corruption tools will begin tomorrow in Belgrade. The event, which will be opened by the Serbian Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, will identify the most suitable solutions in selected anti-corruption areas.
The two-day conference reflects the public interest to the topic. A recent survey by the "Center for Policy Alternatives" showed that citizens of Serbia rate corruption as the fourth leading problem in the country, following poverty, unemployment and criminality.
Jointly organized by the OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) and the Serbian Ministry of Finance, the conference on "Establishing efficient tools to prevent and fight corruption in Serbia" consists of various sessions, such as ethics and the prevention of conflict of interests for persons holding public offices, public procurement as well as a discussion about the need to establish a centralized anti-corruption agency.
Other speakers at the opening session of the conference will be Mark Davison, Acting Head of the OSCE Mission, and Bozidar Djelic, the Serbian Minister of Finance and Economy. Participants to the conference include representatives of the FRY and Serbian Governments, national and foreign anti-corruption experts and local and international organizations and NGOs.
At the request of the Ministry of Finance, the opening session will be open to all media, and print media are invited to attend the entire conference proceedings. The introductory session will be be held on Friday, 25 October, between 9:15 and 10:00 in Hall 3 of the Sava Center. There will also be a press conference in the Art Cafe of Sava Center on Saturday, 26 October at 12:30.
