EBU admits two Yugoslav broadcasters as new members
BELGRADE 12 July 2001
BELGRADE, 12 July 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia welcomes the decision of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to admit Radio Television Serbia (RTS) and Radio Television of Crna Gora (RTVCG) as members on 9 July, with immediate effect.
"We consider the decision of the EBU to admit Serbian and Montenegrin broadcasters another sign of the importance that international organizations attach to the participation and involvement of Yugoslav institutions and representatives in their work", said OSCE Mission Head, Stefano Sannino, in Belgrade. He added that this was a development with mutual benefits.
Explaining that the OSCE was presently involved in talks about transforming the Serb state television and therefore particularly aware of the problems RTS is facing, Mr. Sannino expressed the hope that the EBU will be able to assist the restructuring of RTS technically, especially in the transmission sector.
"The OSCE has supported the endeavours of Radio Television Serbia and Radio Television of Crna Gora to be admitted to the association of Europe's broadcasters as an important impetus to their ongoing attempts to establish a new foundation for national public broadcasting system", Mr. Sannino said.
Yugoslav Radio Television (JRT) was a founding member of the EBU in 1950. Radio Television Serbia and Radio Television of Crna Gora have been accepted for joint membership, as EBU members must have national coverage.
