OSCE Mission organizes study visit for Serbian journalists to ICTY, ICJ
BELGRADE, 24 November 2008 - Eight editors and senior journalists from media outlets in south and southwest Serbia are in the Hague today on a study visit to learn more about the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice.
During the six-day OSCE-supported study tour, the journalists will meet representatives of the Prosecutor's Office and the Court and will have a chance to follow the court proceedings. They will also exchange experiences with Dutch journalists who report on the work of the Tribunal.
"The trip is a part of an extensive training programme through which the OSCE Mission helps journalists report more professionally on war crimes. The journalists have already visited the national institutions dealing with war crimes," said Dragana Nikolic, the Head of the OSCE Mission's Media Department.
"Professional reporting will contribute to reconciliation in the region and explain to people in remote areas of Serbia how the justice system in the Hague functions."
Sladjana Novosel, the Editor of the weekly Sandzak Danas, added: "This is the first time that journalists from local and regional media will have the chance to see war crimes trials at the Hague Tribunal up close. The public in southwest Serbia is very interested in those trials and I believe that now we will present them in a more professional manner."
