OSCE Mission supports discussion on evaluating work of prosecutors in Serbia
BELGRADE, 18 November 2008 - High-level judicial officials and legal experts from Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro discussed ways to evaluate the work of prosecutors at a two-day meeting that ended in Belgrade today.
The event was part of a programme implemented by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the Prosecutor's Association of Serbia which aims to establish an evaluation model for the work of prosecutors.
"Transparent, clear, objective and measurable criteria for the evaluation of the performance of prosecutors are crucial for assessing the work of each individual prosecutor, and should serve as a benchmark which should be met for career advancement," said Ruth Van Rhijn, the Head of the OSCE Mission's Rule of Law and Human Rights Department.
Goran Ilic, the President of the Management Board of the Prosecutor's Association of Serbia, added: "Our aim is to strengthen communication and co-operation between Serbian prosecutors to enhance their professional knowledge and skills. We are also glad to share experiences with our counterparts from Croatia and Montenegro. The evaluation needs to be carried out by an independent and impartial body. In the Serbian context that body is the High Prosecutorial Council."
The Prosecutor's Association of Serbia is a non-governmental organization, supported by the OSCE Mission to Serbia. It unites some 600 prosecutors across the country.
