OSCE Mission holds conference in Belgrade on investigations into war crimes
BELGRADE 8 May 2006
BELGRADE, 8 May 2006 - Closer co-operation between police investigators dealing with war crimes and witness protection programmes is the aim of a three-day conference that opened today in Belgrade.
Organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro, the event brings together investigators from the region, as well as international experts, who will share best practices in the field and offer advice to the Serbian Interior Ministry on war crime cases.
"All efforts to make operational co-operation more effective will be in vain if there is no support for this initiative at the highest level of Government," said Ambassador Hans Ola Urstad, Head of the Mission. "Commitments to investigate and prosecute war crimes must be matched with adequate human and financial resources."
The conference is also being attended by representatives of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
