Secretary General issues statement regarding tragic death
VIENNA 1 September 2000
VIENNA, 1 September 2000 - The following statement was issued by OSCE Secretary General Ján Kubis:
"As a citizen of the Slovak Republic, as well as the Secretary General of the OSCE, I express my strong outrage over the tragic violent death of Mrs. Anastazia Balazova of Zilina, Slovakia, who died from injuries following an attack by unknown perpetrators who entered her home on 20 August.
"Such attacks, whether they are racially motivated or not, are absolutely unacceptable in a civilized civil society. Citizens should not remain silent. They should create such an atmosphere in society which would stand against violence and intolerance of any kind.
"Together with others, I expect that the government and the respective institutions will not only
bring to justice those responsible for this barbarous act, but that preventive and corrective measures will be resolutely taken which would help to prevent similar acts.
"I ask the family of Mrs. Balazova to accept my sincere condolences."
