OSCE PA President condemns attack on Armenian Parliament
COPENHAGEN 28 October 1999
COPENHAGEN, 28 October 1999 - The President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Mrs. Helle Degn, is deeply shocked by the terrible acts of violence that took place in the Armenian Parliament Wednesday and expresses her condolences and deepest sympathy to the Armenian Parliament and the relatives of the victims.
Mrs. Degn strongly condemns this brutal and unacceptable invasion of the Armenian parliamentary premises with the resulting killings and hostage taking of parliamentarians and government officials.
According to present reports, the Armenian Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliament as well as a number of fellow parliamentarians did not survive the attack. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament was also the Head of the Armenian Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and his death is a great loss for the entire OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
Mrs. Degn calls upon all political forces in Armenia to ensure this tragic event will not set back the process of democratization in Armenia. She also calls for those responsible for the crimes to be brought to justice.
