CHISINAU, 26 January 2001 - Following an invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe's (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) today established an Election Observation Mission for the parliamentary elections scheduled for 25 February. Ambassador Charles Magee (USA) was appointed as Head of the Election Observation Mission.
Eight international election experts have set up an office in Chisinau. In addition, nine long-term observers will arrive shortly to carry out regional monitoring. The ODIHR has asked OSCE member-states to provide 80 short-term observers for monitoring the voting process on Election Day. The Election Observation Mission will operate separately and independently from the long-term OSCE Mission to Moldova.
On the day following the elections, 26 February, the Election Observation Mission plans to hold a press conference, at which it will issue a statement of preliminary findings and conclusions.
