International election observers in Azerbaijan welcome CEC decision to investigate allegations of fraud
BAKU 7 November 2000
BAKU, 7 November 2000 - The International Election Observation Mission for the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan welcomes as a positive step today's announcement by the Central Election Commission to investigate and to take immediate measures concerning all cases of violation of law and other shortcomings observed by the international and local observers on election day.
The international observers also take note with satisfaction that results have already been cancelled in one district where gross violations of the law were observed.
The international observers also expect that all complaints raised with the Central Election Commission will be thoroughly investigated as well, and appropriate measures taken immediately. Such action will contribute to stress the commitment to democratic reform and respect for the rule of law in Azerbaijan.
The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) stands ready to provide assistance to the Central Election Commission in this context.
