Addressing the psychological needs of hate crime victims through a trauma-informed approach

Hate crimes target victims simply for who they are, and send a message of rejection to all those who share the victim’s identity traits. For this reason, hate crimes can have a greater impact on victims than other crimes, and can cause persistent socio-emotional and psychological distress.
ODIHR’s webinar will promote understanding of sensitive, respectful and trauma-informed approaches to the psychological support offered to hate crime victims. Leading experts and practitioners in the field of hate crime victim support will provide their insights on the community impact of hate crimes, including on group identity, empathy and shared suffering. The speakers will also focus on the psychological support services available to victimized communities and on the importance of recognizing the specific trauma experienced by hate crime victims.
The webinar is organized as part of a joint initiative of ODIHR and the European Commission on Strengthening Targeted Assistance and Response Structures for Hate Crime Victims in the OSCE Region (STARS). The initiative is funded by the European Union through the “Support to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) for knowledge sharing and standard setting on hate crime including hate crime victim support” (CERV-2023-IM-CRAC/RIGH/2), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria.
