The Starlight Stadium Game Design Workshop brings together tech and human rights experts, as well as human rights defenders (HRDs) from grassroots organizations in the OSCE area to define the content, storyline and mechanics of final episodes of Starlight Stadium, an ODIHR-developed online educational game drawing on real-life human rights investigations.
The game sends the players on a human rights monitoring mission in a fictional country, where players gradually learn and apply the core skills related to investigating human rights violations, including forced labour and ill-treatment among others. The game addresses the relevant international legal framework and human rights principles while taking into account gender and other diversity considerations.
ODIHR has produced two episodes of Starlight Stadium since the project was initiated in April 2019. During the upcoming workshop, the two final episodes will take shape in a participatory and inclusive design process blending the technical expertise of game developers and the human rights monitoring experience of activists, ODIHR and partners.
The topics to be discussed and integrated into the new episodes will include:
- analysis and verification of data;
- report writing;
- advocacy campaigns and follow-up;
- well-being, physical and digital security of HRDs.
As a result, the core game narrative, human rights content and mechanics will be consolidated across all four episodes of the game, setting strong foundations for the development phase that will conclude in the first half of 2023 with the release of the final version of Starlight Stadium.
