This event will allow for the exchange of experience and expertise between lawyers from South-Eastern Europe on issues related to defence work in war crimes cases. It will gather around 20 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, and two defence counsel from ADC-ICTY. Two lawyers from Kosovo will take part in the event.*
Access to ICTY records and files, the use of ICTY evidence, defence investigations and plea agreements in war crimes cases are among the topics that will be addressed. A final session will cover the impact of the socio-political setting on the fair administration of justice in war crimes cases.
The event is the first peer-to-peer meeting being organized in 2013 under the framework of the War Crimes Justice Project – Phase II: “Supporting the transfer of knowledge in war crimes cases among the national jurisdictions of the former Yugoslavia and with the ICTY”. Three peer-to-peer meetings are planned for 2013, with the remaining two to bring together witness-support providers and judges, respectively.
