Gross distortion of OSCE Belarus policy by newspapers Nasha Niva and Nasha Svaboda
MINSK 11 October 2000
MINSK, 11 October 2000 - The OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group in Belarus strongly refutes the libellous reports of "Nasha Svaboda", dated October 10, 2000, and of "Nasha Niva", dated October 9, 2000, about the presentation made by Ambassador Dr. Hans-Georg Wieck, the Head of the Advisory and Monitoring Group of OSCE in Belarus on the occasion of a seminar on "The Vision of European Solidarity" held in Bialystok, Poland on September 24-27, 2000.
According to the articles in "Nasha Svaboda" and "Nasha Niva", the Ambassador pleaded for the Union of Belarus with the Russian Federation in order to bring about democratic institutions in Belarus. In no way, whatsoever, has Ambassador Wieck defined the objectives and policies of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in such a way, nor have any of the manifold activities of the OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group in Belarus, which were initiated in January 1998, been guided by such strategies, as outlined in the above articles. The articles offer a reprehensible distortion of the presentation by Ambassador Wieck, on the occasion of the Seminar on European Solidarity, on the situation in Belarus.
The articles constitute a continuation of occasional publications aimed at the defamation of OSCE activities in Belarus; through the putting together freely invented and unfounded reports and speculations. The articles aim at undermining the credibility and the efforts of the OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group, as well as of other European Institutions, to seek a peaceful solution for the ongoing constitutional controversy in Belarus and the overcoming of the existing democracy deficiencies in the country by way of meaningful dialogue, as demanded by the OSCE Summit Declaration on November 19, 1999.
