OSCE Mission to Montenegro supports regional roundtable discussion on police integrity

An OSCE-supported regional roundtable discussion on promoting police integrity brought together some 30 professionals from the police training institutions and the agencies involved in integrity planning and management on 3-4 October 2016 in Danilovgrad, Montenegro.
The OSCE Mission to Montenegro organized the event jointly with Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), Interior Ministry and the Police Academy of Montenegro.
Participants from Banja Luka, Belgrade, Danilovgrad, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Podgorica, Pristina, Sarajevo and Skopje exchanged views about the training activities, methodologies and strategies to promote and strengthen police integrity.
“It is my pleasure that the Police Academy is the host of such an important event, which aims to improve the integrity of police officers at all levels, through the exchange of best practices on developing a training curriculum, methodologies and planning, as well as practices and challenges in integrity management and planning,” said Rajko Pekovic, Director of the Police Academy.
Tanja Ostojic, Acting Director General of the Directorate for International Co-operation and EU Integration at the Interior Ministry recalled that “strengthening the police integrity would influence the transparency of the state institutions and subsequently build citizens’ trust towards them. In that way reputation of police officers would be improved.”
”“Integrity is mantra for democratic and accountable police service and it should not be questioned,” said Vladimir Ragozin, Programme Manager of the Security Co-operation Programme at the OSCE Mission. He reassured the Mission’s strong commitment on fostering the police integrity policies in Montenegro.
Paulo Costa, Head of DCAF’s Police Programme, underlined that “basic and in-service training plays a vital role in building and sustaining police services that function with integrity. It also encourages Police to reflect on the conformity of their own values with the work conditions to sustain ethical behavior and integrity.”
The roundtable event was part of the OSCE Mission and DCAF’s joint activities aimed at promoting and strengthening police integrity in Montenegro, which started in 2012.
