OSCE Moldova Mission offers training to young Roma leaders on fighting trafficking
CHISINAU 30 September 2004
CHISINAU, 30 September 2004 - A workshop aimed at helping young Roma leaders to combat trafficking in human beings started today in Chisinau. The three-day event, entitled "Fighting Together Against Trafficking in Human Beings in Roma Communities," is among the first of its kind in Moldova.
Financed by the OSCE Mission to Moldova, the workshop is organized by the Moldovan Roma Students Association with the support of the International Centre for Women's Rights Protection and Promotion "La Strada".
"Roma are a vulnerable and marginalized group in society with relatively closed communities," said Liliana Sorrentino, the Mission's anti-trafficking officer. "We hope that this event will be the starting point for Roma civil society to get involved in combating human trafficking".
During the workshop some 20 young Roma leaders between the ages of 18 and 30 will receive better knowledge of international human rights standards and techniques for monitoring trafficking, as well as of ways of preventing trafficking in human beings in Romani communities.
The workshop is part of the Mission's framework two-year project "Strengthening Protection and Assistance to Victims of Trafficking, Adults and Minors". It is based on a human rights approach and aims to strengthen capacities and infrastructures for identification, protection of and assistance to trafficked persons.
