CHISINAU, 14 December 2007 - The winners of the photo contest "Imaging Moldova - Diversity and Identity", organized by the OSCE Mission to Moldova, were announced in Chisinau today, with the first prize awarded to Iurie Foca.
Foca's photo "Satencele" (Village Women) was selected by an independent jury from some 800 entries submitted by 85 photographers.
Dorin Nicolaescu Musteata received the second prize, and the third prize was divided between Egor Tetiusev and Octav Esinencu.
"The winning images and the ones that we chose to be featured in an exhibition reflect on the life in Moldova, its rich diversity, traditions and modern developments," said Gottfried Hanne, the Acting Head of the OSCE Mission at the awards ceremony.
The OSCE Mission organized the contest to strengthen free and professional media in Moldova, give local photographers an opportunity to share their views and talents and to raise the visibility of documentary photography in the country.
The jury of the contest consisted of Vasile Botnaru, Director of the Chisinau office of Radio Liberty; Corina Cepoi, Director of the Independent Journalism Centre; Mihai Fusu, art director and actor; Irina Grabovan, Director of the AoRTa Gallery; and Roman Jagupov, lead singer of the local band Zdob si Zdub.
The best 50 photographs will be exhibited at the OSCE Mission until 5 January 2008.
