OSCE Mission to Moldova supports launch of Anti-trafficking Commission in Gagauzia
An event to launch the activities of a Territorial Commission on Anti-trafficking for the Autonomous Territorial Unit (ATU) of Gagauzia was held in Comrat on 6 October 2015 with the support of the OSCE Mission to Moldova. Members of the local Commission, the Permanent Secretariat of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and representatives of the OSCE Mission to Moldova attended the event.
The Territorial Commission on Anti-trafficking for ATU Gagauzia is one of 33 Territorial Commissions operating across Moldova under the guidance of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings. The Commissions are tasked with monitoring and reporting on the implementation of national legislation and policies designed to combat trafficking in human beings.
As part of its anti-trafficking mandate, the OSCE Mission to Moldova co-operates with the National Committee to strengthen the Commissions’ capacity to fulfil their monitoring and reporting responsibilities.
“The work of the Territorial Commissions is vital to ensuring the proper implementation of anti-trafficking legislation and policies throughout Moldova,” said Olesya Tanasoglo, first deputy Bashkan of Gagauzia and head of the Territorial Commission on Preventing and Combating Human Trafficking in Comrat. “With the support of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, these commissions are better able to maintain momentum in their work at the local level towards preventing trafficking in human beings.”
The OSCE Mission to Moldova provides assistance to the Territorial Commissions as part of a project that aims to strengthen the institutional response to trafficking in human beings in Moldova. Within this project, the Mission provides training to the Permanent Secretariat and awareness-raising materials for the Commissions. The Mission has also supported an assessment into the work of the Territorial Commissions on Anti-Trafficking that will be presented on 9 October 2015.
