OSCE trains Moldovan armed forces in secure handling and storage of small arms and light weapons
CHISINAU, 20 March 2014 – Twenty-eight officers of the Moldovan armed forces today successfully completed an OSCE-supported training course on physical security and stockpile management of small arms, light weapons and conventional ammunition, in light of the introduction of new ammunition procedures in Moldova.
“I am confident that this project will contribute to reduction of the risks for people living near ammunition storage depots,” said Ambassador Jennifer Brush, Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova. “By lowering the risks of ammunition proliferation, we seek to contribute to security and stability in the whole region.”
Officers who took part in the course learned how to safely and securely handle and store small arms and light weapons in accordance with OSCE and international best practices. The officers who completed the course today will be able to train other specialists from the Moldovan armed forces, the Ministries of Interior and of Justice and other relevant institutions, replicating the acquired experience.
The training course lasts for a total of three years. The first module of this project took place from 5 to 20 March 2014. The multinational team of trainers included specialists from Austria, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland.
