The first 173 graduates of the UNMIK/OSCE Kosovo Police Service School completed their in-class training and were deployed in the field, working under the supervision of international police officers.
The class included 17 members of ethnic minority groups and 39 women, becoming the first contingent of newly trained officers in Kosovo's new community-based police force. The next step in the programme was 19 weeks of field training.
Founding the Kosovo Police Service was a significant step toward restoring trust and confidence in law enforcement among the citizens of Kosovo. As of spring 2005, nearly 7,000 cadets had received several weeks of basic police training.
