OSCE Mission helps raise awareness about Roma and Ashkali communities in Kosovo
PRISTINA 6 November 2004
PRISTINA, 6 November 2004 - As part of its continued efforts to improve both the quality of journalism and status of smaller communities in Kosovo, the OSCE Mission today launches a four-day training programme for Roma and Ashkali journalists in Strpce/Shterpce.
Ten young journalists from the Roma and Ashkali communities will take part in the training, which will allow them to provide better coverage and represent the interests of their communities through established Kosovo Albanian and Kosovo Serb media outlets. They will be able to increase public awareness of the challenges faced by the Roma and Ashkali communities.
The training - both theoretical and practical - will address a variety of issues such as the basics of journalism, ethics, interviewing techniques and news analysis.
The non-governmental organization Sunshine is also involved. It will monitor the work of the 10 journalists after the training and will co-ordinate submission of written work from them in media outlets.
The initiative is part of a co-operative effort established between the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) and the OSCE Mission in Kosovo to increase training for local journalists. Guest speakers from RTK, the public broadcaster, and the Temporary Media Commissioner will also participate.
