PRISTINA, 18 March 2004 - The Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Pascal Fieschi, has expressed extreme dismay at the numerous acts of violence throughout Kosovo yesterday, which has left a number of people dead and scores of others wounded.
"This is a day of sorrow for all the people of Kosovo," said Ambassador Fieschi. "Violence like this only causes personal pain and harms relations between communities. More importantly it will make it more difficult to finding long-lasting solutions to the problems in Kosovo."
"In light of these tragic incidents, the people in Kosovo and their political leaders have a responsibility to bring calm and continue on the path of embracing democracy and civil society."
Ambassador Fieschi also extended this message to the media:
"In situations such as these, the media have a great responsibility to factually report on events and not be party to creating more tensions," he said. "If claims made in and by the media cannot be verified then they too must accept responsibility for misinforming the public."
"Our thought and our deep sorrow are extended to families of the drowning victims and those who senselessly lost their lives."
