International organizations build access ramps for disabled persons in Kosovo
PRISTINA 3 December 2003
PRISTINA, 3 December 2003 - To improve the access of disabled persons to public services, the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and the EU are constructing 93 access ramps throughout Kosovo.
"Disabled persons are able and willing to contribute to all aspects of life," said the OSCE Mission Head, Pascal Fieschi, on the International Day of Disabled Persons.
"But it is up to society to support them and get their contribution in the best possible way."
The OSCE Kosovo Mission is supported in this project by the European Union and the European Agency for Reconstruction.
Premises to benefit from this project range from schools, municipal buildings, documentation centres, court houses, medical facilities to post-telecom buildings.
Handikos, a local non-governmental organization committed to facilitating and improving the lives of the disabled in Kosovo, selected the locations.
Eighty-five ramps have already been built in twenty-two municipalities. A further eight ramps are currently being constructed in Zubin Potok, Leposaviq, Zvecan and North Mitrovica. The construction work is being carried by Mercy USA and six regional sub-contractors.
Approximately 30 per cent of those locations chosen by Handikos are schools which are used as polling stations on election days.
