New awareness-raising campaign in Kosovo targets violence against women
PRISTINA 24 November 2003
PRISTINA, 24 November 2003 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo is tomorrow launching a two-week awareness-raising campaign to highlight and urge action on the issue of violence against women.
Entitled "React! Violence is a Crime", the campaign will start on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and will end on 10 December, International Human Rights Day. These 16 days are used world-wide by individuals and organizations to focus on violence against women as a human rights violation.
Across Kosovo, public debates, live television programmes and art exhibitions will be organized, and white ribbons will be distributed to signify a pledge by men not to remain silent on violence against women. In addition, briefings for Kosovo Police Service officers, teachers and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will explain how to identify and respond to domestic violence.
The campaign is supported by billboards and posters across Kosovo, and radio and television spots that will air over the next 16 days. A leaflet listing all events in Kosovo is available from the Mission Press Office.
This initiative underscores the efforts taken by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo in collaboration with its partners in the region to act on behalf of and support the victims of violence.
