OSCE Kosovo Mission hosts training seminar on economics reporting
PRISTINA 23 April 2003
PRISTINA, 23 April 2003 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has begun a four-day training course for local journalists concerned with covering economic issues.
The course aims to help media look at the basic concept of how to report on economic matters, focusing on the peculiarities of reporting this topic in a transitional environment.
"Kosovo is in a difficult period of fundamental change, marked by serious economic difficulties for all sections of society," said Mustafa Eric, OSCE Media Development Officer. "The new structures and institutions currently being built are striving to establish a functioning market economy, with the responsibilities of the welfare system gradually diminished."
Ibrahim Rexhepi, a professional economics journalist on the Kosovo daily newspaper Koha Ditore, has been invited as a guest speaker.
Topics to be covered include the undefined economic system, lack of investment and poor conditions for a free market, all which can lead to economic stagnation, corruption and a high unemployment rate. In these circumstances, the media in Kosovo play a vital role in providing people with access to crucial information about trends which affect the economy.
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has been supporting media in Kosovo since 2000 with various training projects. This year, the multi-faceted programme is designed to focus on specific topics to improve the reporting skills of journalists.
