Kosovo media receive training on political reporting
PRISTINA 14 April 2003
PRISTINA, 14 April 2003 - Today the OSCE Mission in Kosovo is launching a one-week training course on story production for television, with a focus on current political affairs.
The course, held in conjunction with Vienna-based Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF - Austrian Broadcasting Corporation), is aimed at promoting objective and factual reporting in politically vulnerable environments.
"Kosovo, being a society in transition, has a media landscape which is still developing," said Werner Herics, the ORF trainer. "The purpose of this course is to make journalists more sensitive in approaching their work and teach them how to find ways of getting information. This includes doing political research, and dealing with information gained from sources."
The participants will benefit from both the theoretical part of creating political stories, but also enhance their technical abilities to develop quality political television programmes. In addition, this practical course will also involve cameramen and video editors who will work with participants to film and edit stories with the assistance of an expert video editor.
"It is essential to work with and train young journalists and show them that there are some rules that must be followed," said Herics. "This is central to good reporting, and allows journalists to reflect and know that their report was accurate, correct and objective."
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has been supporting Kosovo media outlets since 2000 with various training projects meeting journalists' needs. This training strongly communicates specific OSCE standards on improving the reporting skills and quality of TV reporters, and media overall.
