Kosovo's Temporary Media Commissioner not to issue any further broadcast licenses
PRISTINA 28 March 2003
PRISTINA, 28 March 2003 - Kosovo's Temporary Media Commissioner (TMC) has announced that it will not issue any further broadcast licenses until a new body, the Independent Media Commission, will be established.
Following the completion of a third round of licensing in March 2002, the TMC's Office in Pristina had continued to receive requests for broadcasting licenses.
However, under the legislation of the new Commission ("Law on the Establishment of the Independent Media Commission"), which is expected to be discussed soon by the Kosovo Assembly, it is envisaged that the broadcasting licenses issued by the TMC shall expire and that these licenses will be renewed according to a new procedure.
The institution of the Temporary Media Commissioner was established on 17 June 2000. It is an independent body and receives administrative support from the OSCE Mission in Kosovo. It acts as the regulatory agency for broadcast media and is responsible for the implementation of a temporary licensing regime.
