PRISTINA, 18 October 2002 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo welcomes the signing of Memoranda of Understandings which will allow the setting up of polling stations in Serbia and Montenegro for Kosovo's municipal elections.
A memorandum was signed by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees on 17 October. A second such memorandum was signed with the Commissariat for Refugees in Montenegro earlier this week. The technical documents mean that the electoral preparations and public information campaign may be intensified for 26 October municipal elections. Final preparations can now move forward, including the hiring and training of polling station staff.
An estimated 109,000 people from Kosovo are registered to vote in Serbia and Montenegro, and will be able to cast ballots in person at over 200 locations. Ballots will be counted at the OSCE's Counting and Results Centre in Kosovo.
The OSCE is also deploying 125 International Polling Station Supervisors to Serbia and Montenegro to ensure the proper and impartial conduct of voting on 26 October.
The voting will be observed by accredited domestic non-governmental organizations and international teams from the Council of Europe.
