Certification period for political parties in Kosovo ends in four days
PRISTINA 27 June 2002
PRISTINA, 27 June 2002 - Only four days remain before the political entity certification process ends in Kosovo.
All political entities - parties, coalitions, citizens' initiatives, and independent candidates - are reminded that they must submit their application to the Political Party Service Division of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo's Department of Elections Operations by 17.30 on Monday, 1 July, if they want to run in the forthcoming municipal elections. Late applications will be submitted to the province's Elections Complaints and Appeals sub-Commission for adjudication.
According to electoral rule 4/2002, political entities must be certified in order to participate in the elections and to be included on the ballot. The certification requires the submission of a completed application form, a list of municipalities for which the entity wishes to compete, at least 100 signatures of support per municipality, a non-refundable fee of 100 euros per municipality, and a 150 word-long political statement.
The certification period, as set by Kosovo's Central Election Commission, began on 3 June. To date, 72 political entities have picked up application forms. This number includes 36 parties, one coalition, 17 citizens' initiatives, and 18 independent candidates. Of those candidates, 31 are from Albanian political entities, 27 from Serbian, eight from Roma, Egyptian or Ashkali entities, four from Bosniak/Gorani, and two from the Turkish community.
