Pristina conference focuses on supporting NGOs in South-eastern Europe
PRISTINA 7 June 2002
PRISTINA, 7 June 2002 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo is today hosting a meeting on improving co-operation between non-governmental organisation (NGO) and community support centres in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Civil society plays an important and influential role in voicing citizens' interests and concerns. The aim of the two-day conference is to highlight this and share the experiences gained by the OSCE-established NGO support centres in the region. The OSCE will also use this conference to discuss and identify ways of enhancing the work of these centres, particularly with a view to facilitating cross-community and cross-regional civil society co-operation.
Particular attention will be paid to understanding the difficulties NGOs face - whether in terms of infrastructure, communication, bureaucracy, or ethnic issues - while aiming to overcome divisions and improve their capacity to operate in an open, transparent and publicly accountable way and enhance their ability to participate in the democratic process.
The conference will be held at the Grand Hotel in Prishtinë / Pristina from 7 to 8 June.
