PRISTINA, 24 September 2001 (OSCE) - Almost 350,000 people in Kosovo and beyond had visited combined Voter Services and Registration Centres by Saturday's deadline.
They included those who were registering for the first time, many of them from Kosovo's Serb community. Just under 70,000 people from the Serb and other communities, which boycotted the election last year, took part in the registration process in Kosovo. A further 104,000 participated at centres in Serbia and Montenegro.
In Kosovo, more than 175,000 people went to Voter Services Centres to correct personal details or be allocated a Polling Centre.
Those figures may change as some data remains to be processed. In addition, a further 20,000 people have so far been deemed eligible to cast their vote by mail. OSCE's implementing partner, IOM, continues to process thousands of applications received by Saturday's deadline.
Now OSCE will start compiling the Provisional Voters' List for this year's Assembly Election.
Between 8 and 17 October, voters inside Kosovo and organizations with an interest in the elections, such as the certified political entities, will be able to inspect the Voters' List and challenge the eligibility of individual voters. At the same time, voters in Serbia and Montenegro will have an opportunity to verify their details on this provisional list and make limited corrections.
There were more than 900,000 people on the Voters' List for last year's local elections. The addition of so many new registrants, particularly from Kosovo's Serb community means this year's Voters' List will top the one million mark.
